Her Brilliant Career by Alice Spigelman

Directed by Moira Blumenthal

Dramaturg Tim McGarry

As war gathers in Europe in 1938, Miles Franklin battles remorse when her mother Susannah dies. The gruelling six years of looking after her mother have left Miles defeated. She feels she has failed; as a writer and as a daughter who never married or lived as her mother wished.

She decides to give up writing.

An unexpected visitor arrives.  Edwin Bridle, the fiancé Miles left behind thirty years before to pursue a ‘brilliant career’ wants a place in her life. Infuriated by the intrusion, she tells him to leave.  Edwin refuses, for he holds the winning card that gives him the right to stay and might just convince Miles to keep writing.
